Support and Solidarity in Challenging Times for Colleagues in DEI Oppressive States

In light of recent events and the ongoing challenges facing many of our colleagues in states where Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts are under attack, I want to reaffirm our commitment as the Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL) organization to stand by you, listen to you, affirm your experiences, and support you in any way we can.

Last fall, we created a safe virtual space for student affairs assessment professionals in DEI oppressive states to express their concerns. Through these discussions, we've come to understand the unique difficulties faced by many of you in oppressive climates. Your voices have been heard, and your experiences acknowledged. I want to express my gratitude to those who participated in these discussions and helped shed light on the challenges you face. Your courage and honesty have been invaluable in shaping our approach moving forward. I also want to thank the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) and the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) for making space and time to share your words of wisdom with these colleagues as we navigate this rough terrain together.

As President of SAAL and as a person of color in academia, I want to emphasize that my heart goes out to all those navigating these difficult circumstances. SAAL has always been guided by the principle of equity, and we remain steadfast in our support for all our colleagues.

Moving forward, I will be working closely with our Board to identify ways in which we can further support those of you in DEI oppressive states. Your wellbeing and professional development are our priorities, and we are committed to ensuring that you have the resources and support you need to thrive in your roles.

Your feedback is essential as we continue to refine and expand our support initiatives. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any suggestions or concerns you may have. Your voices matter, and we are here to listen.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to the field of student affairs assessment. Together, we will navigate these challenges and emerge stronger than ever.

In solidarity,

Renée Delgado-Riley, Ph.D.,

President, Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL)
